 Attending My First Blockchain Hackathon

Introduction

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to attend my first blockchain hackathon, and it turned out to be one of the most exciting and educational experiences in my tech journey. As someone relatively new to blockchain development, I wasn’t sure what to expect—but I walked away with new skills, great connections, and a deeper appreciation for decentralized technologies.


What is a Blockchain Hackathon?

A blockchain hackathon is a competitive event where developers, designers, and entrepreneurs come together—usually over a weekend—to build decentralized applications (dApps) or tools using blockchain technology. These events often focus on innovation, problem-solving, and collaboration, with many offering mentorship, workshops, and prizes for top projects.


Preparing for the Event

Before the hackathon, I:


Brushed up on blockchain basics: Ethereum, smart contracts, wallets, and tokens.


Learned Solidity, the main programming language for writing Ethereum smart contracts.


Set up my development environment with tools like MetaMask, Hardhat, and Remix.


Explored blockchain APIs and SDKs provided by the event sponsors.


Even though I felt underprepared at times, I reminded myself that hackathons are also about learning by doing.


The Hackathon Experience

1. Team Formation

I joined a team of 4 developers I had just met at the event. We had a shared interest in financial inclusion and decided to build a decentralized micro-lending platform.


2. The Project

We built a dApp that allowed users to request small loans and repay them with interest, using smart contracts for transparency and security. The idea was to empower unbanked individuals to access peer-to-peer credit.


3. Challenges Faced

Smart contract bugs: Debugging Solidity code under time pressure was tough.


Gas fees: Deploying contracts on testnets taught us about gas optimization.


Time management: We had to make tough decisions on which features to prioritize.


4. Mentorship and Learning

The mentors were incredibly helpful. They guided us on best practices for writing secure contracts, UI/UX design, and how to pitch our idea effectively.


Demo Day

After 36 hours of intense coding, coffee, and collaboration, it was time to pitch our project. Each team had 5 minutes to present. We walked through our app’s features, showed a live demo, and explained the impact we hoped to make.


To our surprise, we won 2nd place for Best Use of Blockchain for Social Impact! It was a huge morale boost and validated the hard work we had put in.

Hackathons are not just for experts. Beginners are welcome, and everyone learns together.


Teamwork is everything. A good idea becomes great when you collaborate effectively.


Blockchain is powerful. Seeing what others built in just a weekend was truly inspiring.


Always be curious. Even when things break or you feel stuck, it’s part of the process.

Attending my first blockchain hackathon was both challenging and incredibly rewarding. I walked in with doubts but left with new skills, confidence, and a passion for building in the Web3 space.
